Spring Science Q & A

Q: Why can’t I see a rainbow when it is sunny and snowing at the same time?

A: Raindrops have a uniform smooth surface that refracts the light quite well- think of the smooth surface of a prism. Snowflakes are irregular and have rough edges, their surface does not refract light well, hence no rainbows.
